Funding

Partnership Health Canterbury Te Kei o Te Waka, receives money from the Ministry of Health (MOH) via the Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) for each person enrolled. The MoH estimates how many times each person will visit a general practice team to determine how much funding to provide. This system is called ‘capitation’, since it is based on payments per capita (per head). Of course, some people will visit their general practice teams more frequently than expected, while others will not go at all.

The table below is indicative of the funding Partnership Health Canterbury's core service streams receive from the Canterbury District Health Board. The table excludes PHO Performance Programme and PHO Management funding. The actual amount of funding we receive is recalculated every quarter based on changes in population.

70% of the money Partnership Health Canterbury receives each year is spent on what we call 'First Level Services', subsidising visits to General Practice teams. The remainder is used for health promotion, ensuring specific communities have access to the services they need, and administration.
