Early Intervention for Maori with Diabetes

maori health

As part of a pilot project, 1100 Maori people aged over 35 have this year been proactively screened to identify their risk of diabetes. Some have been referred to Maori providers for lifestyle change assistance - with 8% so far asking to be referred on. After a year, those enrolled will be followed up, to get a picture of how many have had improvements in their condition, how many have continued to seek care, and how many have dropped out. This project is being evaluated now, and the information gleaned will be the first step in looking at proactive screening for other groups with high health needs.
