The Pacific population in Canterbury is a vibrant community. However, it is also one that, according to research, finds it hard to access health services, especially for children, youth and those with chronic conditions.
Continuing our strong commitment to improving Pacific health, this year we funded a Pacific Health Manager and worked with others to revitalise the Pacific Reference Group. Four Partnership Health Community Workers (PCWs) - two of whom are of Pacific Descent - work in schools with high Pacific populations, linking young people and their families to health services.
Since the February 22 earthquake, close work has been done with the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs, which established the Pacific Hub at the Aranui Community Trust (ACTIS), an information and coordination centre for Pacific people affected by the earthquake.
Research into Pacific health issues is an ongoing focus. Partnership Health is involved in the Health Research Council, analysing trends in Pacific peoples' use of primary care and collecting data about Pacific views of primary care.
