Our Journey

The waka tradition is an ancient concept conveying journeys, discoveries and destinies. The name Partnership Health Canterbury/Te Kei o Te Waka reflects the journey ahead for this primary health organisation.

Te Kei o Te Waka translates as 'the middle of the canoe'. Traditionally, this is where the navigator, the Kaihautu, the chief, the leader and the spiritual experts sat. Te Kei o Te Waka is also another name for the Canterbury region, given it is situated in the middle of a mythological canoe (the South Island).

Te Kei o Te Waka is the most important part of the waka for Partnership Health Canterbury. If the direction is not clear, if the paddlers are not paddling in unison, if the goals and objectives for each step of the journey are not planned, the result will be frustration, chaos and mayhem. In short, the waka will capsize.

Partnership Health Canterbury's waka will ultimately lead to the physical well-being and welfare of all people in the Canterbury region. Te Kei o Te Waka will provide balance, leadership and direction for that journey.
