Partnership Health Canterbury can help you quit smoking July 10, 2007 13:07 Quitting is your choice… it’s our business to help. Quitting smoking is hard. That’s why we give you all the support you need. Partnership Health Canterbury General Practices all offer quit smoking or smoking cessation programmes to help you and your family benefit from healthy choices. Your family doctor and nurse can help you quit with ‘PEGS’, our smoking cessation programme. PEGS stands for Preparation, Education, Giving Up and Staying Smokefree. Getting help can make the difference in achieving your goal to stop smoking. Your general practice team will encourage you to consider quitting and support you as you quit. They will individualise the PEGS programme to your needs, to maximise your likelihood of success. When you enrol in PEGS, you typically return weekly or fortnightly for ongoing advice and support. Your general practice team will motivate and counsel you as you quit smoking, and give you powerful information about smoking and quitting. You may also be eligible for substantial subsidies towards nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), including patches and gum. You might not manage to stop smoking on your first attempt. This is perfectly normal! Many people who have quit successfully have had to try more than once. The important thing is not to give up—and we will help you. PEGS has been proven to be effective and is consistent with the New Zealand Guidelines for Smoking Cessation. Contact your Partnership Health Canterbury general practice team today.
