Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease Quality Improvement Plan April 7, 2008 11:04 Mortality from cardiovascular disease (CVD) has decreased appreciably in the last 25 years, but the spectrum of CVD remains the leading cause of death in New Zealand and accounts for much serious morbidity. The incidence of type 1 diabetes is increasing and the prevalence of type 2 diabetes has risen to what has been described as epidemic proportions. Determining priorities and ensuring the best use of available resources represent a challenge to governments, those advising them and those responsible for service delivery at the local level. With the support of the Minister of Health, the Ministry of Health has established an Expert Advisory Group (EAG) to provide advice on diabetes and cardiovascular disease to the Ministry and District Health Boards (DHBs). The advice takes the form of a Quality Improvement Plan, which describes the recommendations that have been prioritised and agreed to by the Ministry and DHBs.
